Lights, Camera, Action: Video Creation Bootcamp!

Objective:
Equip students with foundational video production skills, foster responsible digital citizenship, and inspire confidence in storytelling through visual media.

Workshop Description:

This hands-on workshop teaches students aged 9–15 to create polished, engaging videos for any platform. From storyboarding to editing, students will learn the essentials of video production, including camera techniques, sound design, and ethical digital practices. They will produce their own short films, vlogs, or tutorials while exploring creativity and teamwork.

Workshop Content

Duration: 4 sessions (90 minutes each)

Session 1: Video Basics & Storytelling

  • Introduction to Video Creation:
    • Types of videos (vlogs, short films, tutorials, documentaries).
    • Key roles: director, camera operator, editor.
  • Storytelling Essentials:
    • Plot structure (beginning, middle, end).
    • Developing a “hook” to engage viewers.
  • Activity:
    • Brainstorm video ideas in groups (e.g., “A Day in My Life” or “How to Make a Paper Airplane”).
    • Create a simple storyboard using templates.

Session 2: Filming Techniques

  • Camera Skills:
    • Framing (rule of thirds, close-ups, wide shots).
    • Lighting tips (natural vs. artificial light).
    • Stabilization (tripods, DIY hacks like stacking books).
  • Sound & Audio:
    • Importance of clear audio, reducing background noise.
  • Activity:
    • Film a 1-minute “silent movie” using gestures and expressions (no dialogue).
    • Practice shooting B-roll (extra footage like hands writing, nature scenes).

Session 3: Editing Mastery

  • Editing Tools:
    • Intro to free apps (iMovie, CapCut, Canva Video).
    • Transitions, text overlays, and sound effects.
  • Activity:
    • Edit the “silent movie” from Session 2, adding music/sound effects.
    • Game: “Transition Challenge” – Smoothest clip transition wins!

Session 4: Final Projects & Showcase

  • Create & Edit:
    • Film and edit a 2-minute video on a theme (e.g., “My Super Skill” or “Eco-Friendly Hacks”).
  • Peer Feedback:
    • Use a rubric to assess creativity, clarity, and technical skill.
  • Premiere Screening:
    • Host a showcase for parents/peers.
